Sin #1: The Initial Cost – The 17 Deadly Sins of Flipped Learning Technology Selection

When I was director of technology for a school in Chicago, I was responsible for choosing the right technology for our school. My team and I spent countless hours making important decisions that impacted administrators, teachers, and ultimately students.

One of the first things I considered was the initial cost of the device, software, or tool. However, one mistake I made was that I forgot about some of the other setup costs that popped up. For example, I didn’t consider:

  • The cost of accessories such as dongles, which were needed for a device to be used.
  • The cost of getting the tool integrated with other tools.
  • The cost of customizing the tool to meet our specific needs.

I learned that the initial cost is more than the list price.

To get it right depends on each school and what they are setting up. The initial cost can be huge if its a 1:1 program. My school has a very good new IT director and lots of funds. This year could be a big year for IT and flipping for us.
